THE WINNERS
I enjoy knitting and so tried to create a cozy living room scene focusing on a Saturday night chilling in front of the TV. Enjoy!
Customization: I used a rubnbuff paint for the bronze parts and coated them all in a gloss spray paint. I then built up the black wash over the bronze parts of the bear to get the desired effect. I created a head band for the bear to make this resemble myself in a slight way for fun as I love the rockabilly style. I used a blue acrylic to build up layers on the chest area and finished it off with a light coat of bronze rubnbuff pulling the bear together. My favorite addition was the fake eyelashes just to make her eyes stand out and finish the desired look. I've tried to integrate my personal interests into the final look and I decided to not customize the little bear as I wanted to keep him fresh and innocent and he was not the main focus of the final picture.
I wanted to create an image that was meaningful to me. So, I chose to play with the idea of vulnerability. When looking for a backdrop for the Mecha, I came upon this lone church on an island. Then the image came to me immediately: a Mecha towering and casting a shadow over a tiny church in the middle of nowhere, with chemtrails leaving the location. I leave the interpretation to the viewer.
Customization: Base armour coat and saber hilts are RED, and the “endoskeleton” and pistol are GUN METAL. I dry brushed the ALUMINUM color on top of the RED and GUN METAL. I did not fill in all the scratches with either ALUMINUM or wash because I like the used, sun dried look of certain parts, like an old car that spent too much time in the sun without proper wax. Every scratch/chip/dent is made with an exacto knife. I scratched and sanded down the edges to help with the weathering later. One of the ears (picture right) is broken. Because of the war weathered appearance, some extremities are sure to have been damaged, so I cut off a part. Decals are added in post. I tried the homemade method, but the scale is too small for the tools I have available at home. I wanted to order some, but due to the ongoing situation, the projected shipping time was 2 weeks past the end of the contest. I’ve added a few example here, but there are more on the final image.
"Reawakening"
Abandoned to nature, this Gundam was nearly lost to time and the elements. Now, when humanity needs him the most, he reawakens. Will his power be used for the good of all? Will he choose the better path?

"You will be safe." Gundam sacrificing his life to save the helpless family moments before rescue.
This is a huge mix of practical FX, animation, graphic design, and lifestyle all crafted together to depict the last moments of a Gundam's heroic efforts to save a defenseless family. Had a blast watching hours of Gundam shows for R&D and getting creative with limited time and scale of model.
Customization: Physical scratches with tree blade, weathering with multiple layers and different types of paint, disembodied arm with yarn and paperclips, physical holes in shield done with screwdriver and melted texture using a lighter.
ENTRY #05 @FRANKPHOTOWERKS
Working on this Gundam, I thought about all the stuff we put so make care into to, to just beat up. But if something is built well, I think it can take it. So, after trying out a few photo ideas, I decided to do something optimistic.
Customization: Stickers on eyes, one eye painted over. Antenna broken and realigned. Black paint wash for panel lining. Chipped and weathered with black and brown acrylic paint. Paint mix to add corrosion and rust on joints, jet pack, and in the missing eye. Silver paint on rifle, finished with black acrylic wash. Cloth goods yellow scarf (t-shirt), ropes (string) holding sword hilts on arm, belt to carry rifle, wrappings on shins.
"Earth Federation Propaganda"
Customization: To avoid confusion and save time, I'd like to point out that the only "customization" I did independent of the kit and stickers was scratch kill tallys on the bottom left shield and inscribe "This machine kills Zakus" on the back propulsion appendage, a tiny reference/parody to lore about various musicians and their guitars.
I wanted to keep it simple and not overdue any customizations especially since I’m so new to this lol. I started with cleaning the areas where the pieces were attached to the kit itself. I also payed attention to apply shoe polish to any specific areas I couldn’t clean up to perfection, to heighten the weathering. I used my exacto knife to apply superficial cuts into the armor to give a “battle look” and also allow the shoe polish to penetrate deeper than its other superficial layers. The “whip” can be applied as a tail and a weapon. I chose to use it as a weapon to showcase all the different points of articulation and how deadly of a weapon it truly is. I also weathered the whip with the same process. I struggled with how I wanted to showcase this figure, but I knew I wanted the unique look of the whip to be a center point of the shot. I wanted to shoot with either water or sand to give a dramatic feel of the whip. After trying out both I ultimately enjoyed the look of sand and how they complimented each other. I’m very pleased with how this build turned out and my shot! This being my first time I had a lot of fun doing this. Especially during this time of quarantine!
"As long as we don´t stop, the road willcontinue" - Orga Itsuka
I would like to thank those who made the competition possible in the first place and also those who took part. Otherwise I would probably never have entered the world of the Gundams and together with the other participants a great feeling of community from newcomers was created. I am now successfully addicted to Gundams and especially Gunplas... Thanks!
Customization: Painted areas instead of stickers, Painted Claws (Feet), Weathering ( + Acrylic Chipping painted effect), Metallic details, Sprayed matte coat finish. *Original background by @Gamerkiller48.*
Today, Disney deployed the BZ-L1TYR Quarantine Enforcer to stop people trying to sneak into the parks.
Customization: Full disassemble and paint, dry brush weathering, used sharpie silver paint pen on metal elements, dumped issued back pack and designed custom jet pack in Tinkercad, then 3d printed and painted it.
This was my first gunpla build and only second Bandai kit. It was a fun experience to build and and semi-destroy the build. For the final photo, I tried to get creative with scale and used HO scale buildings from a train set and a micro machine car (that I found on a riverbank) to make the Zaku look truly giant! I’m really pleased with the end result! Thanks again to Zay for putting this on and giving us all a fun challenge!
Customization: Cut/scaring to add battle damage, black wash to fill lines and make the damage pop more, sponge chipping to add extra weathered look, same wash/chipping applied to weapons, painted eye with red gloss paint to give it a sheen, Gray stripes added to made the Zaku unique, unit marking decals, instead of the included stickers, finally, a matte clear coat to seal all of the work.
"Reawakening"
Abandoned to nature, this Gundam was nearly lost to time and the elements. Now, when humanity needs him the most, he reawakens. Will his power be used for the good of all? Will he choose the better path?
Customization: Aging and damage process by dremel tool + black matte acrylic wash + pitting and rust accentuated with Tamiya weathering master kits + clear matte coat + weathering completed with Tamiya weathering master kits.
Final photo process: Shot with D800 and 50mm lens + Weeylite rgb mini light + Adobe Bridge and Adobe Photoshop CC + stock background photo from Unsplash (https://unsplash.com/photos/JWa5jZ1LkJY) + more Photoshop.
On Patrol: I took this figure out to the backyard and found a nice mossy tree stump for the set up. I thought the scale looked like a giant jungle where Char Aznable would be on patrol. I used a portable light and atmosphere spray to enhance the photo. I then pulled the photo into Photoshop to enhance the eye and add glass to the scope.
Customization: I first used a pen to do the panel line work to add detail. Bullet holes and plasma slashes where then added to multiple parts using a soldering iron. I then painted them black and silver to show exposed metal and burn marks. I then applied a light silver-wash to make the plastic look more metallic with a final black-wash to make the Zaku look dirty. I didn't take a picture of the anti-ship gun before, but it was a basic grey. I added a silver-wash to make the gun look metallic and added some red highlights using a toothpick to match the Zaku.

In remembrance of Kobe Bryant.
Customization: Decided to customize the wings as well, the whole body is painted yellow and purple to remember my fallen idol Kobe Bryant. Signature kobe pose, made the ball of energy resemble a basketball, fire wings, and on the wing you can see the Black Mamba insignia. Loved this competition.
Standing strong in earth and fire.
Customization: Black wash, brown wash, water slide decals, and some silver paint around some edges.
I really wanted to incorporate Legos into my Gundam build and since I was going to modify it I figured I should build it a hangar.
Customization: I first repaint and then weathered my Gundam these were the steps.
1. Primed 80% grey
2. Changed color scheme to black and gold with gun metal for joints and weapons
3. Created bullet holes and saber scorch marks with heated toothpicks, hobby knife sculpting tools
4. Scratch marks using Xacto and sandpaper
5. Filled in all damage with gun metal first to give realistic effect
6. Dry brushed silver over scratch marks
7. Melted torso and shoulder using rounded sculpting tool to give a large circular scorched effect
8. Replaced broken arm with exposed wires from headphones.
Customization: While customizing, I actually used nail polish for all the extra reds, blues and golds on the figure. My girlfriend Janna went crazy and started customizing hers right away with some nail polish and makeup. I thought the idea was fun and weird so I used the nail polish also! I took a couple of random figure pieces I had laying around and super glued them on to give him the extra spikes. Then afterward, I just rubbed some dirt on him to try my best at some weathering. My favorite figures have natural weathering so I tried to recreate that a little bit.
Customization: To customize- I did not use traditional methods. I actually used nail polish for the color pops/ shine, eye shadow makeup for the worn look, and old hair extensions (synthetic) for her hair!
“Victory”
Customization: Black wash (for panel lining and oil drip effect), Heavy battle Damage (dry brushing technique), Paint chipping, Dirt paint, Sanding on figure for damage, Matte clear finish.
“Shaken, not stirred”
Customization: Used gold paint on the helmet crown points, the arms, the yellow portions of the shield, and the feet coverings. Additionally, I used black paint to create the chipping effect and then used silver overtop that to make sections appears more worn. This worked particularly well on the grey, red, and blue, more so than on the white portions. I then used some Vallejo weathering paint on the figure to give it a dirtier, more worn look. Additionally, I took a nail file against the stickers to bring out the silver beneath to make it look more scratched and worn.
Moments before a brand new GM Sniper II is gunned down like all its fellow grunt mobile suits.
"Aile Strike Enforcer"
Customization: Acrylic paint chipping effect, Semi-gloss coat, Weathering & armor scratching, Chrome detail to knife.
Gundams are very sleek and streamlined. I wanted to create a battle-ridden Gundam that has been inactive for generations. The figure needed to have a quick read on the effects of nature and time. I decided to go with a Zaku unit due to its big shapes, which would work well with my custom moss.
Customization: Weathering, acrylic chipping for oil and rust effect, and custom miniature moss.
vHong Kong Cruisin'
Customization: Weathering, acrylic shipping painted effect, metallic detail finish.
"ENGAGED"
I used an air pistol to shoot all the little rocks and dried mud, as if an explosion occurred. I used Photoshop for the light saber, had a green light on the side holding the saber. and that is pretty much it...
Customization: Added scratches for battle damage (like claw scratches). Added paint to scratches. Cut sword damage into shoulder. Black and Brown weather wash. Also pigments "oil engine dirt." Also did a shoe polish black and brown weathering. Silver touches to the grey parts. Also One leg (the right one) melted a little during a shoot with Fireworks.
This is the most "practical" composite I've ever done! After taking all the time and effort to physically build this kit and weather it, it only felt right to retain as much of the original magic as possible. So, once I cut the figure out in Photoshop and added the engine/sword effects, I didn't touch it -- no color correction, burning/dodging, exposure adjustments, etc. I wanted my "handiwork" (flaws and all) to be on display, and I'm super glad with how the raw model just shines through! I don't know anything about Gundam beyond what I saw in Ready Player One, so I used that as my "mood board" and went to work. This has been a super fun project introduction to kit building, and you can bet I'll be doing more in the future!
Customization: Basically wear/weathering. Used a steel Brush and a nail file to scuff up high-wear areas (corners, creases, exhaust overhangs, protruding parts, etc), and used old black water color paint to give "corrosion" to nozzles, around vents, and around scuffed up areas. smeared solid water color nubs over areas that felt like they should be dirty. Tried to give it some weathering, without completely overdoing it.
Guerrilla Gundam, Fire Away!
Customization: Camouflage pattern painted on all limbs, head, hands and feet, Various shades of metallic paint lightly brushed on all metallic weapons, ammunition, joints, fingers, knees, shoulder spikes, bottom of boots, chest, jetpack exhaust ports, various torso buttons, and hoses on legs, waist, and head. Chipping throughout and on right arm shield. Various decals added throughout, matte coat, weathered with black shoe polish. Also, we used house plants, potting soil and rocks to create the environment our character is in indoors, Atmosphere Aerosol was used as well as a subtle natural flame effect near the bazooka for general ambiance. *vfx near bazooka as well.
This build was fun, probably not my first choice but due to (cough) the pandemic options were a lil slim at the hobby shop. I swapped the head w/ an old Gundam that I built back in the late 90's, a mix of Vallejo, mr.color, and mission models paints. Airbrush, hand painting... and I attempted scoring / chisel panel lines... btw I realized you really need better tools to do this LOL. There were a number of other things I bought to add but the last few weeks of work have been intense so they got scratched. Tried some new techniques w/ PS (prob over did it) LOL but this was fun either way.
Customization: Head swap, Panel lines/scoring, Airbrush, Paint, & weathering, Damage & rust.
This entry belongs to Dallas, he's 13 and he loves everything anime. That being said I have tried talking him into building Gunpla for so long but I think it intimidated him. This was a giant accomplishment for him for sure. He used a number of different paints from Vallejo to model masters. He spent most of his details on clean cuts sanding than weathering. When it came to photos he wanted to do them all on his own, from concept to sitting w/ me during the PS process.
Customization: Paint/Weathering, Sanding and hobby knife edges, and nubs.
Our last entry is from Jesse. He's 15 and has been obsessed w/ all things Star Wars for about 2 yrs now. So peeling him away for a hot min has been good. Jesse jumped in from start to finish becoming inundated w/ all things Gundam LOL he even started watching the first series which has been fun. He used any type of model paint he could find. Model masters, washes, pigments, etc.... He too spent a ton of time sanding and carving away areas, sharpening other areas, and panel lines. The pictures he took are all him, I didn't assist at all. He set up a couple kindles, for light sources, and went into the woods trying to find what would work. No PS was used for any of his pics. Last lil bit I promise, (proud dad moment I have to share) Jesse is on the Autism spectrum, he's very high functioning on the day to day, but he becomes obsessed with things i.e. Star wars LOL. So seeing him branch out and study Gundam, watch tutorials, and do all his own pics is GIANT for our family. I know I said this in my first email but DUDE, this lil contest has been great for my family! Again thank you from the Blevins family all the way in Ohio.
Customization: Paint/Weathering, Hobby knife, sharpen edges, and panel lines, Damage.

Dremel for weathering. Black and gunmetal oil paints for gunk wash, followed by light sanding to brighten up the larger areas. Metallic brush on silver to finish on gun, joints, jetpack, etc. The builder of Jupitive Gundam (my kit), Hiroto Kuga is featured in my final picture.
